September is National Recovery Month, and we love to see
Hickory House Recovery Alumni recovering out loud! This month, we are thrilled
to spotlight HHR Alumni Michael L.
Originally from Indianapolis, Michael discovered Hickory
House online when searching for treatment options in early 2021. He received residential
care followed by outpatient services, but later that year he began to struggle.
Knowing Hickory House was a safe and effective program, Michael reached out to
get help again in 2022. When he was admitted to inpatient care last February,
he appreciated how Hickory House gave him time, “…time to heal and do some
much-needed self-reflection, along with guidance through that process,” he
shared.
Like most former Hickory House residents, Michael also gave
his compliments to the chef, echoing what others have said about how delicious
the food tastes. As for the other benefits of Hickory House, Michael said, “The
best thing that I learned at Hickory House is that it’s not too late to change
the way I live my life. And that it’s still worth living.”
To live his life to its fullest, Michael moved to San
Francisco to get a fresh start. He credits his time at Hickory House for being
able to take this leap. Additionally, he’s strengthened his relationships with
family and loved ones.
“I’m able to show up for my family these days. And they
actually enjoy me being there,” said Michael. “My brother actually trusts me
enough these days that he asked me to be the best man at his wedding. I look
forward to every day now. I like who I’m becoming.”
Today, Michael manages a sober living home, a job he loves
that challenges him. For fun, he likes to take road trips with his girlfriend
around California to see all The Golden State has to offer. He’s also found a
great 12-step fellowship in San Franscisco. Michael recently celebrated 18
months clean and sober. His best advice?
“Don’t limit yourself, find your people, you’re stronger
than you think.”
